An introduction to career paths in the construction and infrastructure industry.

Build Your New Career is a six-week program for women who are looking to learn about the world of construction and trades in a supportive environment.

This program offers 40 women from Western Sydney the opportunity to obtain units of competency, build confidence, and connect with the industry to pursue future work in trades and construction.

Western Sydney Women are running our Build Your New Career Program in October 2023.

This project is funded under the grant program by Trade Pathways Program - Training Services NSW

Have you thought about a possible career in the trades or construction industry but don’t know where to start? Our program will help you discover new pathways and options.

Throughout the program, we’ll mentor you to obtain the following units of competency:

  • Provide First Aid

  • Conduct workplace communication

  • Prepare to work safely in the construction industry – White Card

  • Work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry

  • Carry out measurements and calculations

“My confidence has evolved because the information I have gained and absorbed such as First Aid, CPR, Safety in a construction site and attaining the white card, has further strengthened my interest in working within the construction industry as a proud indigenous woman. I am also soon to complete my Cert 3 in Supply food chain operations (forklift licence) and my Cert 3 in Driving operations (HR licence).”

Six Week Program Schedule

  • Week 1

    Welcome Day & Program Launch

    We will have a full welcome day on 16 October.

    We’ll explain the program details and run two workshops, Writing a Professional CV and Job Interview Techniques, to help you become job ready for when the program finishes.

  • Week 2

    Training Sessions

    We will split off into two smaller groups this week to complete units of competencies.

    All sessions will be held at Penrith Paceway.

    Group 1 will attend training days on:

    – Tuesday 24 October
    – Wednesday 25 October
    – Thursday 26 October

    Group 2 will attend training days on:

    – Tuesday 24 October
    – Wednesday 25 October

  • Week 3

    Training Sessions

    We will split off into two smaller groups this week to continue the units of competencies training.

    All sessions will be held at Penrith Paceway.

    Group 1 will attend training days on:

    – Tuesday 31 October
    – Wednesday 1 November

    Group 2 will attend training days on:

    – Tuesday 31 October
    – Wednesday 1 November
    – Wednesday 2 November

  • Week 4 & 5

    Site Tour of Lendlease Liverpool Hospital Construction Site

    This experience will give you the opportunity to get real world experience of what a construction site is like. Meet people working in trades and construction and and ask questions.

  • Week 6

    Graduation

    Celebrate your progress and network with employment partners. You’ll receive a trade support starter duffle bag containing a full PPE pack including eye and ear protection, hard hat, high visibility vest, lunch cooler bag and first aid kit.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship/Residency: Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident residing in New South Wales (NSW).

  • Age Requirement: 18 years old or older.

  • Study: You must not be currently studying at TAFE or University.

  • Attendance: A minimum attendance rate of 90% is required to complete the program. Sessions will be held in person for the duration of the program in October and November. In-person sessions will be held on weekdays during business hours. There will be online sessions to attend as well.
